THE NATIONAL FLAG
What is a flag:
A flag can simply be defined as a piece of cloth
attached to a pole or a
rope as a symbol or signal of an
organization,Nation,churches,religions etc
The Nigerian flag consists of three equal sized
vertical bands - the right and left
bands are green; while the middle band is white.
The national flag was designed by Pa Michael
Taiwo Akinkunmi(a twenty-three-year-old
student. )He was
studying at Norwich Technical College in England
when he saw an
advertisement in a newspaper that submissions
were being accepted for the
design of a new National flag. The flag was chosen
in a competition held in 1959
and it was adopted and first hoisted on October 1,
1960 as the national
flag. Nigeria gained independence from the British
government on the same day
the flag was first hoisted. It therefore represents
our independence from slavery
and colonial ruler-ship.
The Nigerian national flag law prohibits anyone
from improper flying or
exhibition of the flag in any condition that
compromises it's quality and
purpose. It must not be defaced, altered or
torn. There is need to understand the meaning of
flag, colour
and it significant.
Description Of The Nigerian Flag:
The flag originally had the following
colours green white green with a red sun in the
middle
of the white section of which was later removed by
the
judges and was left with green white green colour
pattern of which is used as the Nations national
symbol.
The flag has two unique colours which means
different
things.
Green- The sea green in the Nigerian flag represent
Agriculture, forest, natural resources. As it is known
Nigeria is a blessed nation with abundance natural
recourse, it is also reached in agriculture with
good land
for cultivation, favourable climate for the rearing of
animals and with more natural abundance of which
the
sea green colour in the Nigeria flag represents.
White- the white colour in the Nigeria flag
represent or
simply means a five letter word which is Peace. As
it is
known without peace in a nation they can’t be
growth
development that is why the white colour in the
Nigeria
represent peace and unity which is a symbol of
national
growth.
However, the Nigerian government has formulated
certain set of rules to be
followed while unfurling this particular national
symbol of high importance.
While hoisting the National Flag it should be
ceremoniously flown in the morning
during sunrise and lowered at sunset as according
to them a flag of national
importance does not sleep. It's also important to
note that the national flag of
Nigeria should be hung or half flown on days of
state funerals or important
memorial days. If in any case, the flag is in a
room, then no other flag should be
placed higher than that. If the flag is torn out it
shouldn't be flown or used but
rather burned or destroyed.
Anatomy of a Flag
Hoist: Hoist is used to describe the height of the
flag while flying. The term
also refers to the edge of the flag that is attached
to the flagpole or staff. You
may hear the term "hoist end" to refer to this part
of a flag.
Fly : The fly end is the part of the flag that flaps in
the wind and sometimes
becomes frayed.
Flagpole: A flag is most often attached to an object
of support such as a
flagpole, staff or flagstaff, or mast. In general, when
a flag is flown outdoors, if
flies from a flagpole. When a flag is carried in a
parade or displayed indoors, it
is attached to a staff.
Halyard: A halyard is a rope or cable used to raise
and lower a flag on a
flagpole.
Halyard:Rope used to raise the flag; can be
external and tied to a cleat or internal.
Eye: A loop forming part of rope to receive a
shaft,pin or hook.
Toggle:A wooden or metal pin, short rod fixed
transversely in the eye of a rope or chain to be
secured to any other loop or ring.
